A Therapy Office That Doesn’t Feel Clinical

Full-service therapy office design and furnishing for a multi-tenant practice in Portland, OR

Space Planning • Furnishings Procurement • Custom murals and artwork • Experience design

Sprout Therapy engaged us to design the interiors of a new Portland office built to host multiple therapists and bodywork practitioners. The team wanted the space to feel nothing like the cold, clinical settings many people brace for when seeking care. Because the practice includes multi-modality healers, the office needed to flex across different session types while still feeling cohesive. A key constraint was designing for quality without tipping into “boutique-only” signals—Sprout’s work is grounded in access, not exclusivity.

After taking some time to learn about the needs of all of the multi-modality healers, together, we designed a space that feels calm, human, and deeply supportive, not only for the clients but the clinicians who hold space for them. When a therapy space is designed with both the therapist and client in mind, the result is mutual thriving. You can feel that balance the moment you step inside: it’s quiet, warm, and deeply human.

Before: total blank slate

Key Interventions:

A waiting area that lowers the emotional temperature
Most waiting rooms feel either clinical or performatively styled which can heighten nervous-system load. We designed a soft, welcoming landing with comfortable seating, warm textures, and restrained styling that reads intentional and not too visually noisy.

The space communicates steadiness and care without asking anyone to “dress up” for it.

Material palette tuned for warmth, not spectacle
New-build interiors can feel flat or sterile without material depth. To address this, we layered organic textures and grounded tones—materials that add softness and dimension while staying durable and easy to maintain. The office feels warm and human in all seasons and lighting conditions, without relying on trendy statements that date quickly.

Lighting choices designed for regulation and flexibility
Overhead lighting can be harsh, and many therapy settings lack adjustable options. We prioritized gentle, flattering light where possible and created a consistent lighting mood across shared spaces, with flexibility in rooms as needed. Better lighting supports comfort, reduces visual fatigue, and helps clinicians adapt the room to different modalities and client sensitivities.

Distinct rooms, one cohesive through-line
Multi-tenant offices can feel disjointed when each room becomes its own aesthetic island. We allowed each room to carry a slightly different personality while repeating key elements: palette, texture language, and calm-level. Practitioners feel ownership, clients feel continuity. The space holds variety without losing coherence.

Polish without exclusivity
“High-end” cues can accidentally signal that care is only for certain people. We chose approachable comfort and quiet quality. Pieces and finishes that feel considered, not performative, so the office reads professional and welcoming. The environment supports Sprout’s values: high-quality care that feels accessible and community-rooted, not gated.

The finished office meets clients with quiet warmth instead of clinical distance. Inside is an environment that makes it easier to be in the here and now. Across shared areas and individual therapy rooms, the design holds a consistent sense of calm while still leaving space for each practitioner’s personality to show up, so the practice feels cohesive without becoming generic. Most importantly, the space reflects Sprout’s values in a way you can feel: professional and polished, yes, but grounded, approachable, and built for real care. This is where clients can settle sooner and clinicians have a setting that supports the important work they do every day.

“We tasked Sam with redesigning our therapy office, and she exceeded every expectation. The space is now filled with comfort and tranquility, creating the perfect environment for our clients to feel at peace. Sam was amazing at understanding our needs and turning them into reality. She made the entire process seamless, and we are beyond thrilled with the final result.”
